Studio Sample · Research & Decision Support · Reports

A recommendation can be useful even when it says stop.

This internal simulation tests a fictional product brief against public alternatives, commercial constraints and unresolved questions. The original idea received a clear “do not build in current form” recommendation.

Classification: Studio Sample. The brief and business are fictional. This is not client work, primary research or evidence of a market outcome. The research snapshot is dated 23 September 2026; time-sensitive listings and prices are historical sample evidence, not a current market recommendation.

The assignment

Question → evidence → judgement → output

Input
A fictional short-term-rental host asks whether a South Africa-specific welcome-book template merits building.
Work
Review public product listings, competing formats and free or hosted alternatives. Separate observed evidence, inference and unknowns; test the idea against price pressure and AI substitution.
Finished output
A 13-page decision pack with an executive recommendation, evidence summary, risks, alternative product brief and low-risk next test.

Research record

What the evidence did and did not show.

The work was designed to support a decision, not to make a weak idea sound attractive.

OBSERVED IN PUBLIC SOURCES

  • South Africa-specific and general welcome-book products were already offered.
  • Large bundles, interactive guides and free-start alternatives competed with a static template.
  • Public product descriptions repeatedly foregrounded check-in, house rules, Wi-Fi and fewer guest questions.

NOT ESTABLISHED

  • No buyer interviews, survey, search-volume study or market-size estimate was completed.
  • Public listings and prices did not establish sales volume, realised prices or willingness to pay.
  • The work did not claim a validated forecast or guaranteed commercial result.

Executive decision

Do not build in current form

The guest-communication problem is recognisable, but a standalone welcome-book template faces direct competition, price pressure and free or AI-assisted substitutes.

Evidence and interpretation

Evidence

Comparable products covered the same basic information, while some alternatives added interactive delivery or broader host-operation templates.

Interpretation

South Africa localisation and attractive page design alone were not enough differentiation to justify building the original format.

Unknown

Available public evidence could not establish how many local hosts would buy, at what realised price or through which channel.

Recommendation

If the problem remains worth testing, examine a smaller guest-and-turnover operating kit before investing in a full product.

Decision boundary: this is secondary research based on public sources for a fictional brief. No primary validation or product launch occurred. The suggested next step is a testable direction, not a claim that demand exists.
